Summer Festivals and Events: Sneak Peek

SUMMER EVENTS

Whether you’re a foodie or music lover there’s a lot to adore about this year’s offerings.  From living legendary composers to operas and rock stars and Italy’s more famous culinary festivals, this summer has something for everyone.

In Rome, the Caracalla Summer Festival hosts many concerts and performances. Known for 'The Good the Bad and the Ugly' and more recently 'The Hateful Eight', the world's greatest living film composer Ennio Morricone brings his 60 Years of Music Tour. Fans will enjoy Icelandic songstress Björk magical voice with the ancient ambiance. American Ballet Theatre’s principle dancer, Italy’s Roberto Bolle performs among the ancient ruins.

For Pink Floyd fans, Their Mortal Remains exhibit at Rome Museum of Contemporary Art in Via Nizza is a must see.

In the historical center of Verona, the Arena di Verona balances the classics and modern music with such operas Aida and Turandot and concerts from Lenny Kravitz, Deep Purple, and the Scorpions. Other open-air summer festivals include the Puccini Opera Festival near Lucca, the Macerata Opera Festival in central Italy, the Greek Theater in Taormina, Sicily among others.

This year a few major opera houses are staying open for some unique summer programs.  In Milan, Teatro alla Scala serves up 'Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves', Teatro La Fenice offers 'Madame Butterfly' and much more.

In Spoleto, Umbria, the world-renowned Festival of the Two Worlds includes opera, music, dance, theater, numerous special events and art exhibitions. In Lake Como, the Sagra de San Giovanni Festival serves up a lantern light show on the lake, boat parade, fireworks, and folks dressed in traditional historical attire for a fun destination event. Andrea Bocelli will visit his hometown, Lajatico, for two concerts this year.

In Piedmont, the Bra Cheese Festival boasts educational opportunities as well as culinary delights. In Sorrento, the Sagra del Limone Lemon Festival has much to offer all those lemon lovers. The famous San Daniele ham is focal point for the Aria di Festa Food Festival near Udine, serving up with traditional foods and visits to the prosciuttifici.
