WHAT IS THIS GOLDEN BUILDING? Haunted House at Fondazione Prada in Milan
Chic, mysterious and technologic. These are the first impressions that one person has entering the recently opened Prada Foundation in Milan. This new space for contemporary art is more than just a museum. Designed by the world renowned architect Rem Koolhaas, Fondazione Prada is a great (and reassuring) story that illustrates how an abandoned industrial space can turn into a precious (literally golden!) spot for art lovers.
Prada Foundation is in fact a stunning collection of architectural spaces worth to explore. We will definitely talk about its design in one of our next posts. For now, however, let’s concentrate on the mysterious golden building of Prada Foundation. So what is it?
No doubt, the golden volume of a historical guise that rises up above all the Prada complex is the main landmark of the museum. Known as Haunted House it is an old preserved building dating back to 1910. Visually striking and sensationally enigmatic, its exterior is entirely covered in gold leaf and plays a prima-donna role of the main entrance gate.
To access the exhibition areas of the Haunted House you will have to make some turns, pass some doors and climb steep stairs. After all, it bears its weird name not without a reason.
Unlike other spaces that were designed to house temporary exhibitions, Haunted House hosts a permanent collection. The sequence of single rooms thet preserves an intimate spatial scale provides a ‘domestic’ setting for specific works of the American sculptor Robert Gober (1954) and the French-American artist Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010).
