Taormina Guided Tour
You will enjoy an amazing introduction of Taormina with a local expert guide and driver. Your private guide will meet you at your hotel lobby where you will begin a stroll through Taormina, situated on a lofty hill where the site of the old town is about 300 meters above the sea. The downtown area represents a vast range of historical periods from the early Greek settlements and Roman Age to the remains of Byzantine and Medieval constructions up to the 15th century buildings and 17th Century Baroque churches and Palaces. Together with your guide you will visit the most important sites of this area: The Greek Theatre, one of the city highlights built in the 3rd Century by the Greeks and later on almost completely remodelled by the Romans. The theatre is the second largest in Sicily and is frequently used for operas and concerts. You will also enjoy a visit to the court yard of Palazzo Corvaja, a medieval Sicilian palace, dating back to the 10th century. This magnificent palace was originally built by the Arabs and takes its name from the Corvaja family, who were among Taormina's most important aristocrats. After our visit of the palace you will enjoy some time to wander through the public gardens before beginning the next part of your journey by car. During your ride you will pass Giardini Naxos, first Greek colony of Sicily, founded in the VIII century B.C. Prior to the early 1970s, Giardini Naxos was a quiet fishing village, now it is a popular tourist destination, famous for its beaches, panoramic view of the bay and surrounding hills, and its small, but quite busy fishing port. You will then continue your drive to the medieval village of Castelmola where you will enjoy a stroll through its charming narrow streets admiring the beautiful view of the sea and Etna along the way. Your guide will also introduce you to the charming 13th century Arab castle located on the highest point of the area. Later you will enjoy a stop for lunch in a local restaurant before making your way back.
