Tickets & Calendar of Events
Also known as La Scala, the Teatro alla Scala was inaugurated on August 3, 1778 and was originally known as the Nuovo Regio Ducale Teatro alla Scala (New Royal-Ducal Theatre alla Scala). The premiere opera was Antonio Salieri‘s Europa Riconosciuta. Oil lamps illuminated the stage and the rest of the theater. In time, they were replaced with gas lamps, and then electric lights in 1883. La Scala was damaged by the bombing in 1945. It reopened in 1946 with a sensational concert by Arturo Toscanini with soprano solo Renata Tebaldi.
Several operas by Verdi premiered in this theater, including Otello and Falstaff.
