OPERA, BALLET & CONCERT SEASON
The Teatro dell’Opera of Rome was inaugurated on November 27, 1880. The first performance was “Semiramide”, by Gioacchino Rossini.
The name of the theater is Teatro Costanzi, and it comes from Domenico Costanzi, the contractor who built it.
Architect Achille Sfondrini designed the theater. He used the horseshoe shape to create a deep sound resonance. Annibale Brugnoli painted the fresco on the ceiling.
This opera house hosted many premieres, including three operas by Pietro Mascagni, the “Cavalleria Rusticana” on May 17, 1890, “L’Amico Fritz”, on October 31, 1891, and “Le Maschere” on January 17, 1901.
“Tosca” by Giacomo Puccini premiered on January 14, 1900.
