This year it showcases 136 artists and 89 national participations within the historical Arsenale-hall and Giardini-park, and 44 so-called collateral events spread across the city, promoted by non-profit national and international institutions.
The title of this year Biennale curated by Okwui Enwezor, a Nigerian art critic and the first African to direct the Biennale art fair, is “All The World’s Futures” and promises to be inspiring as never before. The results of the Awards Ceremony that took place last Sarturday prove it. The Republic of Armenia has received the Golden Lion for Best National Participation.
The Golden Lion for the Best Artist went to the American Adrian Piper and its work “The Probable Trust Registry: The Rules of the Game #1–3”. The Silver Lion for a promising young artist was assigned to Im Heung-Soon from South Korea and his “Factory Complex”. Finally Harun Farocki from Germany, the Abounaddara Collective founded in Syria, Massinissa Selmani based in Algeria were acknowledged with the Three Special Mentions. What is more, the Jury has also wished to honor with a special mention the United States of America for their presentation of Joan Jonas, an artist of significant oeuvre and influence, and her “They Come to Us Without a Word”.
The resting hundreds of artists and national pavilions, no doubt, worth to be seen too! And the picturesque and romantic spirit of the Venetian lagoon will help to appreciate the beauty and the latest achievements of the art-world. Hurry up! You have 7 months more (up to November, 22) not to miss this stunning excuse to visit beautiful Venice.
