Thrilling Alma Mater: a sonic installation in Milan

Looking for magic in Milan? Visit mysterious and evocative atmosphere of Alma Mater installation by Yuval Avital in Fabbrica del Vapore. 140 loudspeakers, singing women voices, atmospheric sounds of the Earth and vibrant floating lights will bring you into a thrilling world of art and music.

This sensory work of 1200 sq.m is a sound universe that orbits around powerful sounds composed by the artist. Born in Jerusalem in 1977 and living in Milan, Yuval Avital is considered now

among Italy’s most innovative talents of the contemporary music scene. His sonic installation is a collection of grandmothers voices from all over the world singing, praying, whispering and crooning traditional motifs and melodies. The sequence of these sound impressions is played by an amazing forest of 140 speakers made of stone and clay. All is illuminated by the dramatic golden lights softly pulsating with the rhythms of music in the darkness of the huge hall of the Cathedral space of the Fabbrica del Vapore.

This work of art is completed by alternating video projections of grandmother’s faces and former La Scala étoiles ballet dancers, both representing an epitome of femininity and Mother Earth, fertility and nourishment, creative and devastating power at the same time.
