Tickets & Calendar of Events

Nestled in the heart of Milan, the illustrious Teatro alla Scala, commonly known as La Scala, stands as a pinnacle of operatic and cultural history. Inaugurated on August 3, 1778, this iconic theater, originally christened the Nuovo Regio Ducale Teatro alla Scala, has been a symbol of artistic excellence and innovation for over two centuries. La Scala’s inaugural opera, Antonio Salieri‘s Europa Riconosciuta, set a precedent for the theater’s prestigious legacy.

In its early years, La Scala’s performances were illuminated by oil lamps, casting a warm glow over both performers and audience. This lighting evolved with the times, transitioning first to gas lamps and ultimately to electric lights in 1883, reflecting La Scala’s commitment to embracing technological advancements while maintaining its historical charm. The mid-20th century brought challenges to La Scala. In 1945, the theater suffered significant damage due to bombing during World War II. However, its resilient spirit shone through when it triumphantly reopened in 1946. This reopening was marked by a sensational concert conducted by Arturo Toscanini, featuring soprano soloist Renata Tebaldi. symbolizing the theater’s rebirth and enduring spirit.

La Scala has been the birthplace of several masterpieces, notably a number of Giuseppe Verdi’s operas. Celebrated works like Otello and Falstaff had their premieres here, contributing to La Scala’s reputation as a temple of Italian opera.
