From the Etruscan Civilization to the Roman Empire

7 NIGHT TRIP
A great journey discovering life, culture and mysteries of two fascinating peoples, the Romans and the Etruscans. Visit Viterbo, the lake Bolsena, Vulci, Tarquinia in the Lazio region surrounding Rome.

DAY 1: ARRIVE IN VITERBO
Upon arrival at Rome airport, meet your private driver and transfer to your hotel in Viterbo (estimated 75 miles). Following check in, join a guided tour of the city to discover the medieval San Pellegrino district, the Pope’s Palace and the Albornoz Fortress.

Time permitting continue to the former city-state and bishopric (now titular see) of Ferento, 5 miles from Viterbo, and visit its Roman and medieval ruins. Dinner and overnight stay. After dinner optional bath in the natural springs water of Viterbo.

DAY 2: THE DYING CITY OF CIVITA DI BAGNOREGIO AND UNDERGROUND ORVIETO
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for Bolsena and guided visit of medieval Castle Monaldeschi, once residence of the powerful Monaldeschi’s family. Continue with the visit of the church of Santa Cristina and its catacombs. Arrive in Civita di Bagnoregio, the “Dying City”, enjoy a light lunch before departing for your next destination, Orvieto. Here take a tour of the Palazzo Faina Museum and the underground passages of Orvieto.

Return to Viterbo, dinner and overnight stay. Optional bath in the natural springs water of Viterbo.

DAY 3: ETRUSCAN TOWNS AND WINE TASTING
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for Vulci, a rich and important Etruscan city. Upon arrival, guided tour of the Natural Archaeological Park. Following the tour, enjoy a light lunch with olive oil and wine tasting. Continue to Tuscania, one of the most beautiful places of the southern Etruria (Tuscia) and visit to the National Tuscanese Museum and to the Etruscan Academia Museum. Return to Viterbo.

Dinner and overnight stay. Optional bath in the natural springs water of Viterbo.

DAY 4:  BANDITACCIA ETRUSCAN NECROPOLIS
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for Tarquinia and guided visit to the National Etruscan Museum. Light lunch with Maremma’s local delicatessen. In the afternoon departure for Rome. On your way stop in Cerveteri and join a guided tour of the Banditaccia Necropolis, one of the most interesting archaeological sites together with the Etruscan Necropolis of Tarquinia, since 2004 listed as UNESCO World Heritage. Continue the tour with the visit of Mount Abatone and Crespe of S. Angelo. Arrive in Rome and check in at your hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 5: ROME – ESSENCE OF THE ETERNAL CITY
Breakfast at the hotel. Today enjoy a full day of touring to discover the Eternal city in all of its glory. Start first with a visit of the ancient monuments of Rome that will take you from the birth of Rome at the Palatine Hill, to the beginnings of democracy at the Roman Forum and to life and death at the mighty Colosseum. Lunch on your own. In the afternoon, explore Rome more in depth and visit locations that are hard to reach without a vehicle or are often overlooked.

You will reach the Appian Way, admire a segment of the aqueduct and walk in the Jewish ghetto near the Teatro Marcello enjoying surprising and breathtaking views of Rome. Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 6: VILLA BORGHESE TREASURES &  MICHELANGELO’S MASTERPIECE
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning guided tour of the Museum of the Etruscan civilization housed in Villa Giulia, Villa Borghese and Galleria Borghese, to see works by Caravaggio, Bernini, Canova, Raphael and Titian. Light lunch in selected restaurant. In the afternoon, visit to one of the top rated museums in Rome, The Vatican museum, and visiting the world’s greatest art collections.

Your English speaking guide will lead you inside the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica, where you will admire Michelangelo’s Pietà. Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 7: ROMAN CATACOMBS
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning dedicated to the visit of Christian Rome. You will discover the Roman catacombs, an extensive network of tunnels snaking underground, that was once both a burial ground and a place of worship for the first Christians in Rome. You will be taken to the Basilica of San Nicolas in Carcere. To get there, you will descend through a crypt used in the 12th century for exorcisms, passing stacks of ancient human bone fragments.

The tour will continue with the Capuchin Crypt, known as the ‘Bone Chapel’. Here Capuchin monks used the bones of nearly 4,000 of their brothers to decorate the walls and ceilings in intricate designs.  In the afternoon, take some time at leisure for personal discovery. Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 8: DEPARTURE
Breakfast at the hotel. Private transfer to the airport and departure. Arrivederci!
