Art Meets Dream at the Bramante’s Cloister in Rome

DAY TRIP

Art meets Dream at the Bramante’s Cloister in Rome

From September 29, 2018 through May 5, 2019, The Chiostro del Bramante has been hosting Dream, an exhibition of dream-themed art works.  The event, together with the past two exhibitions, Love (2016) and Enjoy, (2017) completes the trilogy dedicated to love and fun in art, which was conceived and curated by art critic Danilo Eccher.

The Cloister of Bramante, a perpetual gift of art from the Renaissance, is the ideal vessel of this art exhibit representing a symbolic journey towards the most unrevealed fragments of the human soul. Here, the idea of dreaming is equaled and developed as the idea of a Journey through the physical and mental state of the visitor.

As we walk in, we are greeted by two closed-eyed female faces by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa. This is the first art work of the itinerary; as they stand, enigmatic and only seemingly peaceful, they remind us of this most natural, yet mysterious activity of man and animals alike.

Dreams, in the thought of Sigmund Freud, are the channel which connects with our unconscious and spiritual dimension.
Through their work, each artist bares their unconscious dimension to the viewer, and similarly through their work, the artist gives the viewer courage and freedom to connect with his unconscious.

I look at Anselm Kiefer’s painting. The artist, maybe willingly, left his creation untitled, and thus even more open to its many readings. A man lies on the floor, maybe asleep, or maybe dead. While sleeping, we retreat from the world and its pain. Sleep may be the last door before death, and what may be beyond, is infinite and limitless as the universe of stars raining upon him.
