OPERA, BALLET & CONCERT SEASON
Teatro Massimo, Palermo Opera Theater, Sicily
Tickets and Calendar of Events
The Teatro Massimo in Palermo stands as a monumental tribute to Italy’s rich cultural heritage, dedicated to King Victor Emanuel II. As the largest opera house in Italy, it holds a special place in the hearts of both locals and visitors alike. Designed by the renowned Italian architect Giovan Battista Filippo Basile in 1864, the opera house is a marvel of architectural ingenuity. Basile drew inspiration from ancient and classical Sicilian architecture, making the exterior of the Teatro Massimo reminiscent of the iconic Greek temples at Selinunte and Agrigento.
However, the theater has not been without its share of challenges. It was closed for twenty-three years starting in 1974, undergoing extensive renovations before finally reopening just four days before its centenary on May 12, 1997. The grand reopening marked a new era for the Teatro Massimo, solidifying its status as a cultural landmark.
The Teatro Massimo offers a diverse range of performances throughout the year. The Summer program is usually held at the Teatro di Verdura, a charming open-air venue, while other performances, including ballets and concerts, often take place at the Teatro Politeama, another esteemed venue in Palermo.
