The Teatro Reale di San Carlo (Royal Theatre of Saint Charles), was originally named by the Bourbon monarchy but today is known simply as the Teatro di San Carlo. The opera house is located in Naples’ city center and it is connected to the Royal Palace adjacent to the Piazza del Plebiscito. It is the oldest continuously active venue for opera in the world, having opened back in 1737.

This opera house was dedicated to King Victor Emanuel II and is the largest in Italy. Italian architect Giovan Battista Filippo Basile designed and oversaw the construction in 1864. What inspired Basile was ancient and classical Sicilian architecture, so the exterior is reminiscent of the Greek temples at Selinunte and Agrigento.
